Internet Printing made easy

Posted in Software by Master Geek on November 21st, 2008 | No Comments »

Notice how whenever you print out a web page it has a whole lot of wasted space and junk you don’t need.

Enter Print what you like (.com). This site will take a URL that you provide and allow you to easily isolate just the content you want to print, in just a few clicks you can have it setup just right.

The only rule is that the page has to be accessible on the public internet.

Highly recommended for the rare times when you need to print a web page.

Google releases a web browser

Posted in Software by Master Geek on September 4th, 2008 | No Comments »

Talk about suprise. Google has released a web browser called ‘Google Chrome‘.

Their idea is that current web browsers aren’t cutting it, so they want to push this out there to help get the market inovating and developing a better product.

The browser is fully open source to help this. It is also based on the same rendering engine as Apples Safari browser that is on PC/MAC and the iPhone.

So far I have to admit I like its clean lines and it has 2 killer features that I have always wanted in firefox.

  • Each tab is it’s own process, so if it crashes it won’t take down your entire browser, you will just lose that tab.
  • You can drag a tab from within a window to make it’s own new window. This is perfect if you are browsing and then open a video and want to have it in a seperate window while you continue browsing.

It can auto import all your Firefox settings so worth a try.

Hopefully this will change the game and keep everyone on their toes.

Master the Google

Posted in Software by Master Geek on June 23rd, 2008 | No Comments »

Most people know that Google can do some pretty cool search tricks. What you might not realise is that you can do so much more, Master the Google helps with a great list of all the tricks you can do.

Some things I liked that I didn’t know about.

So much more than just a search engine. :-)

Firefox 3 is out

The new Firefox 3 is the best browser out now, it was just released so download it now.

Not only is it now one of the fastest, with some of the new features the bar has been raised much higher.

Competition is a wonderful thing. :-)

Are your backups working?

Posted in Software by Master Geek on June 2nd, 2008 | No Comments »

I have everything backed up, well at least I though I did.

My laptop hard drive died on the weekend and I went to look at my backup disk and noticed that the backup program that gets run every day had decided to not backup my email or my firefox personal data. So I have now lost 5 years worth of email and all my bookmarks.

I started to check my backup systems for my other PC’s and noticed that, while the program was running and everything looked good, it was actually failing for some unknown reason and wasn’t backing up all my data.

Everyone knows to backup, though have you checked your backup to see if it is actually backing up what you need it to backup?

You suck at photoshop

Posted in Funny, Movies, Software by Master Geek on February 4th, 2008 | No Comments »

This is one of the funniest things I have ever seen. This is a series of tutorials like nothing else. While it does teach you something about Photoshop, the goings on in the background is what the show is about and it can’t be beat for pure entertainment.

Enjoy. :-)

Automatic Panoramas

I wanted to make a panorama from some photos I took and found a handy little tool called: AutoStitch.

This software will automatically make a panorama from the photos you give it. No need to put them in order or line them up, just point it at the photos and wait.

It is just a demo so there are a few limitations. The main one is that it can only use JPG.

To get the best results:

  • When you first run AutoStitch, go to the edit, options menu and set the output size to scaled 100% (top left), otherwise you will end up with a small image. Also set the JPG Quality to 100 (bottom right)
  • When taking photos, you want them to all be at the same exposure. This means that don’t mix light photos in with dark photos if you can avoid it.
  • A tripod will help you to take nice non blurry shots.
  • The output file is created in the same directory as your source files and is called panno.jpg

Fun fact: ILM (the guys who?? do all the cool effects), have licensed the software to use. :-)

Change Vista Welcome Screen

Posted in Software, Vista by Master Geek on December 20th, 2007 | No Comments »

So the Vista Welcome screen that you logon to is pretty boring and of course Microsoft won’t let you change it.

Along comes LogonStudio to the rescue for Vista and XP. You can create a new logon screen from any image.

It also allows you to download pre made logon screens.

Convert YouTube video to iPod video

Posted in Software by Master Geek on November 29th, 2007 | No Comments »

So one of the best gaming podcasts is on YouTube: NoobToob.

Episodes will generally go for about an hour and sitting for that long is troublesome. Watching video on the go on my 5.5 gen iPod is so much easier. :-)

After a quick google I found Free YouTube to iPod convertor. You just enter the URL to the YouTube video, select the format you want and away you go.

Nice easy and works every time.
